A New Project

Picked up yesterday from Craigslist:

It is a lugged steel AMF frame. Interestingly enough there is a sticker right above the bottom bracket indicating it was made by Bridgestone in Tokyo Japan. It’s a project for sure. I will probably make it a fixie for a little different riding situation. In the short term I made load it up with some parts from a short frame bike I have in reserve.

Step 1 will be to weld the chainstay as you can see from this photo:

I have submitted it to the maintenance shop for repair. After that – stripping and painting. I’m thinking:

I will update my progress…

It's a pretty good looking frame underneath the coat of grime and rust. I think I may go back and add cream accents to the headbadge area at least. I have a friend in the cut vinyl business and I should be able to get that in place.

I will probably need some consulting from you on things like setting the chainline and removing the freewheel. I post the pictures if i can get all the paint off.
  • cool - anything I can do to help just say the word. are you actually going to make it fixed or single speed?
  • lithodale
Fixed - I’m going all in. Plus, i’ll use it to work on my suppleness - can’t have too much of that.

I have an old road bike that someone gave me and that I bought new tubes and tires for. That was prior to understanding the concept of frame size - it is too small for me to ride. I am intending to use it’s wheels, cranks and front brake. From there it will likely by OYLC or more CL.

    The term is "souplesse"

    ;-)
  • you're going to have a rear wheel issue then most likely. While you can thread a cog onto a hub designed for a freewheel, it douesn't have the reverse lock ring threads. you could get a Surly Fixxer - http://www.surlybikes.com/part... - but I think they're fairly expensive and you may be better of just getting a stock wheel from KHS (through OYLC of course). They come with a Formula Hub (16T cog & lock ring included I believe) and a semi deep V rim. I've been running one for a while now with no problems. The hubs are actually very widely used and very durable.

Gonna b fun. Cool 2. I really miss riding right now but the house is a joke so I doubt I'll get out until power comes back.

U have a timeline on the project?
  • lithodale
No real timeline. Welding repair is complete today. I am going to work at stripping the labels and then the paint this weekend. I've got 12 hours of baby watching both days this weekend. I am going to try to find somewhere at work to set up and paint.

I've got some wheels to put on the bike but the rear wheel will need it's cassette and freewheel removed
