Roller Riding

Tuesday – 14
On Tuesday the weather was poor and I don’t really have a great option for bad weather riding so I finally used the set of rollers I got from a friend at work. Riding the rollers was a very interesting experience. It is intimidating to start because you are just kind of up there with nothing holding you up except the momentum of crazy feeling pedaling. The back end of the back gets loose on you quick and oddly you really almost have to look ahead to maintain balance. You can see that I set up next to a wall to give myself somewhat of a bailout in case of a fall.

30 seconds in to the exercise the truth had been flushed out on several fronts:

  • The bike does not fit (we already knew that)
  • My balance is poor (wii fit does not agree)
  • Cycling makes you sweat…a lot (can’t usually tell)
  • Those padded cycling pants might be nice

I mananged to get on for 45 minutes and around 14 miles worth. I did not fall although I made several dismounts. This is a depature from my normal riding which is more of a mix between the pleasure of riding and admittedly to gain and maintain fitness. I am pleased and proud to have been able to ride as much as I have this winter especially since it is my first season. I would not want to ride a trainer or a set of rollers very often. I really missed the movement and variation in scenery and in riding postion.

I was really shocked at the amount of sweat I produced. I was completely soaked after 45 minutes as was the floor below. I had read something advising you to wipe the bike off afterward but I didn’t really follow it until then.

In the end I was pleased with myself for riding. There had been some talk around the office about whether I could handle them…I think I showed I can.
