Riding through the summertime…

I have ridden many miles since my last update. I have found it increasingly difficult to maintain these updates I guess as many people do…

I have learned first hand the feel of pack dynamics. I was behind a gentleman on the Sunday afternoon ride who took some train tracks slowly and became disconnected from a fast group. I looked on helplessly as I could not rejoin them by myself. It is easy to watch it go down on TV and think surely he can catch back up…now I know. It was simultaneously frustrating and fascinating.

I have missed very few ride opportunities at lunchtime and inserted many others in spots where I didn’t think I could fit them. Riding has increasingly become an important, defining part of my life. Alongside the more important marriage, family, and work parts I am quite proud to see it sit.

I managed 3150 miles in my first year of cycling.

Much to the general disdain of my immediate family I became engrossed in TdF coverage.

This past Sunday I dropped my children with my gracious Mother and set out upon Oldham County. Looking for 50-60 I was quite pleased to finish 48. The heat was overbearing and taught me an important lesson. I felt completely spent at the end of a ride that would not have given me pause otherwise. I will try not to underestimate the impact of 90 degrees and lots of humidity.

I try my best to heed the advice of Eddy Merckx regarding training “Ride lots…”
