Dadgummit! Blow out!

YTD – 3934 MTD – 426 Today – 43 We planned an ambitious route today heading out to pick up Farnsley Knob (0.40 miles, avg. gradient – 15.7%!). Its been a year or so since I climbed it and I was ready to pay a visit. Coming out of N’albany was a little zany and [...]

Everywhere signs…

August 19th, 2010 · View Comments · Bikes, Rides

YTD – 3878 MTD – 370 Today – 25 I thought a lot on my ride today about a post from Mr. Smith about the ambiguity of rural signage. Specifically this passage: …we consulted the map (again) to verify cue sheet directions with random map names that we certainly find in both KY and IN. [...]

Classics in the air…a century Sunday

March 31st, 2010 · View Comments · Rides

Periodically my route out of New Albany takes me across 11th street and I always notice this spot: It invariably makes me think of the Cycling Classics such as last weekend’s Gent-Wevelgem, this weekend’s Tour of Flanders and of course Paris Roubaix in two weeks. These thoughts were especially on my mind as I set [...]

After deciding to race last fall and preparing through the winter and now the early spring the first race was finally here. The Long Run Park Circuit Race was held this morning in the east county. After a fidgety night of nervous sleep I woke up early, packed in a nice breakfast, dropped the kids [...]

March 12th, 2010 · View Comments · Rides

YTD – 945 MTD – 240 Today – 16 The weathermen have been predicting rain and thunderstorms for days to no avail. Each day the sun peeks out and gets it done. Today was looking like it would finally be the day. I swung by the LBS and picked up some Qoleum embrocation in the [...]

So…Wednesday I got hit by a car…

December 11th, 2009 · View Comments · Rides

I have amassed 5000 miles since I started riding a year and a half ago and 4000 this year alone. I have always tried to ride smartly and follow the cardinal rules of being seen and acting predictably. I was dressed in a bright yellow jacket and traveling properly in the road. Wednesdays are my [...]

November rides…

November 3rd, 2009 · View Comments · Bikes, Books, Rides

Today – 34 MTD – 69 YTD – 3550 I set out for lunch today not feeling so hot. I rode hard yesterday for lunch coming in at an 18.5 average then commuted home and back this morning. I had the right clothes on but I was cold. And route-weary…I tried to piece something together [...]

The Crestwood Killer – part 1

October 24th, 2009 · View Comments · Rides, Uncategorized

A century ride(100 miles) has been a goal of mine for the year. I built up with some solo rides here and there in the summer mostly topping out around 60 miles or so. While that is a pretty good ride it leaves a fair amount to go. With my sisters wedding out of the [...]

52-42

October 10th, 2009 · View Comments · Bikes, Rides

The climb is roughly 1 mile and averages 8-9%. I started up in the 42t ring, there is a strong opening pitch that sent me straight to the easiest ratio available to me – 42/25. A few rotations in the shifter moved and clunked me right back into the 21t cog. The down tube shifters on the bike do not currently have enough tension to hold the gearing in place under load.

Mr. Mechanical

September 18th, 2009 · View Comments · Rides

After amassing close to 200 miles in the first few days of the month a wrench was thrown in my progress. Business required me to head out of town for Thursday and Friday, the weekend offered no relief as my wife worked pretty much all of it and my favor pool is currently light. Monday [...]
